Why is it called sub anyways? Is it like a trademark name or not?

Because it’s shaped like a submarine. A submarine filled with joy.

Actually, thinking back through my childhood, I don’t think I ever heard anyone abbreviate submarine sandwich until the ‘90s or so. Perhaps with the proliferation of Subways, maybe, then sub started to become the more common term?
I just remember everyone calling them submarine sandwiches up until my teens years or so. Maybe it was regional. Anyone older than 40 care to verify or dispute my hypothesis?
